General Motors is looking to invest $2 billion in U.S. factories, and that could mean more money or more jobs for union workers as the UAW prepares for contract negotiations, according to UAW officials.
That assessment makes sense, because by pouring investment into the plants, GM will likely add jobs, and if not, increased production could still lead to better wages.
Some jobs may also be retained instead of added, but either way, UAW officials say that when the economy is doing well, the unions do better at the bargaining table.
The UAW will need to do well in its bargaining with GM, but in order to stem lower wages and declining membership, it will likely still need to organize at least one of the so-called "transplants", which are foreign-owned and operated plants on U.S. soil.
